GRAPHIC DESIGN 1
This course places the student in the role of a designer, using a roadmap of strategic approaches in Abode Illustrator/Photoshop, drafting, writing and construction to achieve unique expectations. A large part of the course covers typographic techniques to arrange and model text in Abode Illustrator. Digital photographic techniques in Adobe Photoshop will be covered as well. With step-by-step tutorials the students will learn how to navigate various computer programs to create specific projects.
Students will design their projects with a sequence of stages.

During the presentation stage the student will participate in group critique to gain feedback and enable additional changes to occur.
The student will exit the class with solid understanding of Abode programs, able to produce their own designs and edit photographs.
Studio/Lab Expectations
Welcome to the computer lab! This is a high tech facility with state of the art programs. You will be successful here by focusing on your design work and contributing to a confortable, kind and sharing atmosphere. By following the guidelines below, your time in the computer lab will be successful, productive and creative.
*Be Here. Students are expected to come to class on time. If you are absent, you are responsible for material missed.
*Be Prepared. Come in to the computer lab, log into account, and begin work on your current project. When I start the class, I expect all students to turn off monitors for the day’s directions. Please note any missing work is averaged into your final grade as a zero.
* Supplies.
-Binder/folders, to store handouts and notes.
-U2 Flash Drive, for students who plan or are able to work at home or students who would like to permanently keep their documents (all graphic design files will be deleted after the semester)
-Optional: Students can download a free 30 day trial of Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator at home. Go to Adobe.com if you are interested (Ai CS6 or Ps CS6 Extended). Because we will not work with Photoshop for a while, only download Illustrator first. Remember BA’s computer lab has CS5. CS6 is only slightly different.
*Respect Self, Others and Computer Lab. Respect other people in the class---you will be working together all semester. Be supportive, kind and helpful. Treat our space as a shared workspace---clean up after yourself, keep work, files and assignments organized in your graphic design folder. Be “other-centered.”
*NO food, drink or gum allowed in the computer lab.
*Be personally invested. Things such as listening carefully, cleaning up after your own materials, participating in class discussions and positive, honest, comments to others help make the computer lab a safe and pleasant one. Remember there is only one Mrs. Bruhn. Help each other when you can. That way we can strive forward and maximize the quality produced on projects.
-You may work on extra credit opportunities, when available and if you are finished with all other work.
-Read reference materials on design/CS3 that is provided in class (on shelf).
-Read online tutorials available through help section on Ai or Ps
-Explore tools/functions by “roaming” the interface and creatively “playing”
-NO INTERNET SURFING OR EMAIL. THIS GREATLY REDUCES FINAL GRADE.
*Strive for Flexibility. One of the most important traits to cultivate is an openness to try something new. Listening, taking direction and trying new ways to make are previously unfamiliar to you will be a challenge, but there is a great reward if you do.
*Ask for extra help when you need it. I will more than happily meet with you after school or during a free period to help on projects.
*Grading/Assessment. All work will be evaluated according to BA grading scale (refer to the Parent-Student handbook) and will be graded based on clear criteria using rubrics. Late work will result in a lower grade for the assignment with 10% taken off each day unless excused by the teacher. A class grade below 80% will be unacceptable. The student must make arrangements for additional help. Your overall grade will be based on the following:

-Projects/long-term assignments

-Quizzes/ on basic vocabulary
-Homework/ minimal homework is given during the semester course (does not necessitate the use of software)
-Process*/personal investment in the studio experience
- Being on time and prepared for class
- In-class tutorials exercises
- Effort, Attitude, and use of class time
- In-class focus on work with minimal socializing
- Following directions
- Class Participation
**Effort and good work habits greatly impact the project grade as well.
*Extra Credit. Bonus points are available on various projects for those who wish to take advantage of it or a student can make a proposal to the teacher during the second half of the semester.
